We were discussing the pros and cons between key telephone and       PBX service.              As an aside, the Pennsylvania Railroad had a very sophisticated telephone       network, including its own toll lines and test equipment. Special rules       applied to railroads and pipelines about customer ownership and maintenance       due to their special        environment.              In contrast, some railroads continued with hand-crank magneto (local battery)       phones well into the 1980s. The Reading Co. was big on them. They had       certain advantages in cost for wayside telephones, especially at a distance.        I don't know if any rail        lines in the US still use them. A company ad says they are big in India and       modern sets are made for that.              --- SoupGate/W32 v1.03        * Origin: LiveWire BBS -=*=- UseNet FTN Gateway (1:2320/1)    |
