   Interesting, I was under the impression that most locomotives are designed   
   to treat a pantograph reaching the full extent of lift as an indication of   
   a fault of some kind and automatically drop it. I believe a lot of Dutch   
   swing and lifting bridges have no catenary and the pantograph is lowered   
   while the train coasts through.
