   Perhaps it's legal in your state.  My state bans crossing other than at   
   a crosswalk if within some distance (150ft?) of a marked _or unmarked_   
   crosswalk.  Enforcement, though, is quite lax; it typically only comes   
   into play when there is an auto-pedestrian accident.
