We have the same problem in various parts of Oregon. Take a look at the
on-ramp to I-205 going south from Highway 99E in Oregon City. Not only
is it a tight curve but it is also on a hill, so that large trucks are
usually doing about 20 mph when they merge into traffic that hasn't had
to start from a dead stop, and thus is moving along at well over 60 mph.

The lack of merging lane length is a real problem in far too many
locations. It was fine when the roads were less crowded but not with
the amount of crowding on the road now.
