   There are now so many laws, most of which are so rarely enforced that   
   most people don't even realize they exist, that it's nearly impossible   
   to avoid breaking _any_ law for more than a few hours at a time.   
      
   Of course, this directly leads to discriminatory enforcement: cops   
   decide someone is guilty, e.g. because they have the wrong skin color,   
   and then watch to see what crimes to charge them with. The canonical   
   example is Al Capone: they spent years finding a crime they could   
   convict him for--and we have orders of magnitude more laws to choose   
   from now than they did way back then.

   Close; they outlawed GHB, a naturally-occurring hormone. It's illegal   
   to possess even trace amounts of it (even in your own body, without   
   which you'll die), but you're looking at _decades_ in federal prison   
   plus registering as a sex offender for life if you "distribute" it to   
   someone else without their knowledge, e.g. serving a family meal.
