   Barrier systems inherently require fare readers of some sort, even if   
   they're simple token systems. POP doesn't require fare readers at all.   
    So, I don't get why you're "reacting" here.

   They were shut down in the 1950s, long before I was born, so I can only   
   guess. However, they appeared to work just as buses do today: the   
   operator collected the fare from passengers.

   POP is nothing like having the bus/streetcar operator collect fares; LRT   
   operators don't interact with passengers at all except in an emergency.
