We've had Oyster cards here in London since 2003.

They have allowed Contactless payment using any bank card since late
2012 -- first on busses, then extended to the Underground in 2014.

One other city in Norway has this, there is talk of doing this in
Birmingham and Moscow is working on such a project.

What happened with the New York City Subway's pilot programme to use
contactless, or payment keys, in 2006. AIUI, there was a programme at
42nd Street - Grand Central and one other station, the latter of which I
   forgot.

I also remember that busses in Phoenix had a programme in the 90s that
allowed people to pay with bank card. At that time, however, they had
   swipe their card on entry.
