A few years ago somebody sent me links to pdf files of three maps, LIRR, MNRR
and NJ Transit. They're detailed, but very difficult to use, the maps are
very large, and the text very small, and it's necessary to zoom in and out
   many times to see both.

Here in the UK there are many different rail atlases available, present day
and at various historical times. These are widely available, not just in
specialised transport bookshops. I thought I would be able to get something
similar in the US, but no
luck. Even a bookshop at either Penn Station New York, or Grand Central
Terminal, I can't remember which, had nothing.
