   Some years ago, in a debate with a faddist who insists that everybody   
   should "eat local", preferably growing their own, I used some UN (I   
   think it was) stats about how many acres it takes to support a person   
   and came to the mathematically demonstrable conclusion that it would   
   take seven layers of Manhattan Island to support the people that live on   
   the Island, never mind, the fat-cat commuters.   
      
   I never finished the project (then as now realizing that I was arguing   
   with a brick) but I may nave been on the road to demonstrating that   
   entire state of New York does not have enough arable land to support   
   Manhattan Island at mid-day.
