I do not have facts at hand (not a problem for most of you, I know, but
it bothers me) but I suspect that the nine hundred miles of interstate
highways you a worried about is mostly Interstate 80 and Interstate 25,
over which I have driven a bunch of times hauling groceries, beef, pork,
furniture, and beer to places like New York, and San Francisco.

Without those highways, what would you be doing without?

(The point is what ever argument you use for railroads, I can use for
highways. And I for one am in favor of monies spent for roads, with or
with rails. I am opposed to spending money to line peoples pockets.)

In the interests of full disclosure, wher in the article I pointed to do
the words "American Taxpayers Subsidize a Service They Don't Use"
appear, in any order? I can not find the concept expressed in any words.

The closest I can find is "The welfare queens riding in Amtrak luxury at
the benefit of the American taxpayers are mostly not the poor.
Nevertheless, you and I and future generations are subsidizing every
ticket purchased by those who can afford to pay the fare required to
   make Amtrak profitable."
