Metro North and its predecessors       got locomotives and coaches whereever they could, even SEPTA and SEMTA (still       in SEPTA colors) to        provide service. It wasn't an easy time; often diesels ran in that mode into       GCT.              By the way, in that time frame, Grand Central Terminal was in miserable shape,       too. It might have been saved from demolition, but there was no money to       properly maintain it.
