I used to manage projects in a computer center (in the days that a
computer center housed ONE computer with maybe one auxiliary computer in
attendance)--the electrician that won all of the bids we put out (or got
the emergency work order to repair work done by others) would never work
on "old" work that was not "hot".

He had lots of wrapped or plastic tools to do the work with. His
argument was that if the work MIGHT be "hot" he wanted it to be hot
because it kept him in the right frame of mind and removed the risk of
somebody energizing it without his knowledge. ("Hot" meant 480V, by the
   way.)

I've worked around "hot" stuff a lot--it really is not a big deal if you
   work safely.
