   The July jobs report came in at 73,000 jobs (preliminary figure), while the   
   market was expecting a gain of 100,000.   
      
   Even more striking, however, was the downward revision of the June and May   
   figures. The preliminary jobs figure for June was 147,000 and was revised   
   downward to 14,000 jobs. The May figure was also revised downward from 144,000   
   (preliminary figure) to just 19,000 jobs. These downward revisions, in   
   particular, heavily pressured the stock market last Friday. Meanwhile,   
   unemployment in the US has risen to 4.2%.
