TID: Mystic BBS 1.12 A47       TZUTC: -0400       MSGID: 1:120/616 1d4b243a       -=> Aaron Thomas wrote to Dr. What <=-               AT> There's something fishy about a recent law that was passed (by        AT> Democrats) that makes robo-calls illegal.              Something's certainly rotten in Denmark there (or would that be Sweden?).              Democrats don't do anything to help the people.               AT> I used to get a lot of those        AT> calls, but they stopped after the law was passed.              We need an app for our phones that sends out an air horn-like call, hangs up       then blocks the number.              I never answer my phone if I don't know who is calling. All legitimate callers       will leave a message. Scammers won't (mainly because they aren't dialing the       number - a computer is). After a while, and a few blocked numbers, they stop       calling.               AT> "Dear **Mr Thomas** The interest rate on your loan through **PNC BANK**        AT> will increase in 5 days unless you call the number listed below."              I could see how that would work. It kinds bypasses our "BS detectors". But       it's the same stuff that phishers have been doing for a long time.               AT> Here's what makes me so suspicious about this: Why did the scammers        AT> stop calling people? Just because Democrats passed a law? Who cares        AT> about the law when you're a scammer? It doesn't add up.              Well, it could add up.              Scammers call many, many people, they don't get many "hits". And even fewer of       those will fall for their scam. Then they have to pay for the calls, so they       need to make enough on the scam to make it worth their while. If they get       charged with crime, maybe that puts it over their "worth my time" threshold.                     ... I think my learning curve has turned into a circle.       ___ MultiMail/Linux v0.52              --- Mystic BBS/QWK v1.12 A47 2021/12/25 (Windows/32)        * Origin: cold fusion - cfbbs.net - grand rapids, mi (1:120/616)       SEEN-BY: 103/705 104/119 105/81 106/201 114/10 120/616 124/5016 128/187       SEEN-BY: 129/14 305 153/757 7715 154/10 30 50 110 700 203/0 218/700       SEEN-BY: 220/20 30 90 221/0 6 226/18 30 44 50 227/114 229/110 206       SEEN-BY: 229/300 307 310 317 400 426 428 700 705 240/1120 5832 263/1       SEEN-BY: 266/512 280/464 5003 5006 291/111 292/854 8125 301/1 310/31       SEEN-BY: 320/219 322/757 341/66 234 342/200 396/45 423/120 460/58       SEEN-BY: 460/256 1124 467/888 633/280 712/848 770/1 902/26 2320/105       SEEN-BY: 3634/12 5020/400 5054/30 5075/35       PATH: 120/616 154/10 280/464 460/58 229/426           |
