I currently have phone service through the local provider who has long
switched over from all copper wiring to having the signal transmitted via
cable... the same one that provides TV and internet... to a phone "modem"
that is hooked up to my interior copper wiring in the house.

I am able to connect at 9600 to 14.4k outbound and have it usually be
reliable, but nothing greater than that. Inbound calls seem to be reliable
at lower than or equal 9600 sometimes, but often are only reliable at much
lower speeds. I am not sure what type of system these callers have on
their end (i.e. old fashioned copper, via internet, etc.).

Phonenet sounds interesting. As the connections would presumably also be
coming over my internet/TV cable connection, would there be any reason I
might expect better connection quality than I currently get?
