   I did use a break-out box and discovered that with version VPC2004 SP1 (not   
   VPC2005 as originally posted), serial communications is only working from the   
   guest eCS to the outside world. Nothing can be received into the guest eCS. At   
   least on my system.   
      
   I upgraded to VPC2007 (upgraded over VPC2004 SP1) and sure enough, serial comm   
   started to work properly.   
      
   Now I can use serial communications on a PC without serial ports using a USB   
   to serial converters. Those RS-232 devices just won't go away...
