   Half your bookmarks are missing?  I'd expect all of them to be gone.   
      
   First, open your profile directory and delete 'XUL.mfl' and   
   'startupCache\startupCache.4.little', then restart the browser.   
      
   If that doesn't fix it, do as Dave suggested and create a new profile.   
   I use "SET MOZILLA_HOME=" to cause it to create a new profile in the   
   default location.  Alternately, you can temporarily rename your existing   
   profile directory.     
      
   One or the other of the above should get the Back button working but   
   may not do anything about missing bookmarks.  So...  did you make a   
   backup of places.sqlite as _strongly_ recommended?  If so, replace   
   the existing db in whichever profile now works with a *copy* of the   
   backup, then restart.  What's the result?
