   I agree pretty much with Peter but my background is a bit closer to the    
   metal for the most part where C/C++/ASM plus REXX are more flexible - you    
   will need at least some assembler code if you get very deep and REXX is the    
   "native" scripting language and will probably be a chore if you need good    
   documentation.  I used the Watcom tools where I could simply because of the    
   cross platform support and the quality of the debugger.  Have a look at    
   www.openwatcom.org for more info.
