Some progress. My Asus M3A78-EM, with quad core phenom processor, now
boots (using /SMP /PIC), and my USB 2.0 devices seem to be working
   (limited testing).

However, I have an old IBM 8 meg memory key device, which claims to be
USB 1.0. That works fine with the old IBM USB driver (OHCD), but as
soon as I insert it with USBOHCD 11, the system hangs solid. The mouse
won't move, the clock stops, and the keyboard is completely ignored.
To continue, I need to press reset, or force a power off, and reboot.
