   I don't recall any of my systems hanging during boot with a usb mass storage   
   device attached, but I have had a number of    
   instances of strange system behavior after inadvertently booting with a usb   
   device attached. Sometimes the device was    
   seen as a permanent device rather than removable. Sometimes opening any drive   
   object took a long time. Sometimes    
   everything seems normal. I was never able to see any consistent pattern.   
   Because of this potential for problems, I have    
   adopted the practice of never booting with a usb msd attached. If I do so   
   accidentally, I shut down, remove the device,    
   and reboot.
