   This *does* sound like a hardware issue but the only other thing I can think   
   of    
   that might affect this is whether or not you have AHCI mode enabled in the   
   BIOS.   
   AHCI is to do with SATA disks and non-AHCI mode is also known as legacy mode.    
   You want it in legacy mode not AHCI.
