   I tend to agree with Andreas that you have a hardware issue. Of    
   course shuts off is a pretty vague problem description, but so it    
   goes.   
      
   If it were me, I would start doing some unit testing to isolate what    
   is really failing. I would haul out dfsee and check that the drive is    
   readable and contains no bad sectors.

   I doubt ACPI has anything to do with it. IIRC, the IBM supported APM    
   on the T43. If so, it's probably a better choice than ACPI.
