   Let's not forget PS/2 and IBM's idea that it would be able to reclaim   
   control of the corporate desktop even though it wanted businesses to pay   
   twice as much for a good PS/2 with OS/2 (memory hog at the time) and   
   token ring (not a lot of competition there).    
      
   Unixes and ethernet have been survivors because they were very well   
   designed. Windows survived because MSFT has a ton of money and has   
   historically been willing to let every hardware manufacturer work with   
   them. None of the hardware folks make money, but the prices are low.
