Not all T-40 series ThinkPads will support APM. My T43 (1871-W8M) does
not support APM. ACPI 3.18 does work to some extent, but it does
require a third party program to use throttling, and speed control, to
   keep the temperature down.

FWIW, I don't think that would be the OP's problem, unless he is
trying to use the system in a very warm room (or outdoors on a hot
day). Air flow is easily checked, and, when using ACPI, you can use
the Reactor temperature widget to watch what the system temperature is
doing. My T43 will run at about 70C, with no throttling, or speed
   control.

I have written an experimental program (in REXX), which seems to work
well at keeping the temperature around 45C, as long as there are no
CPU intensive programs running for more than a few minutes.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work on very many machines, and the buggy
ACPI implementation can cause trouble. It does, however, work pretty
good on my 1871-W8M, and one other user has had good success on a
2669. It doesn't work very good on my new Lenovo ThinkPad T510
(4313-CTO), but neither does ACPI. I think I can get my REXX to work,
but it could be some ugly workarounds for some really bad information
   returned by the SETGETTHRTL program.
