Well, maybe they will open source it, when it is ready - I don't know.
OS2LDR from same team has been made available, as far as I
   understand.

I guess it is a matter of taste, what you call an untrusted source, and I'm
not sure, what risk you think can happen from this 'untrusted' source.
I know at least one of the members of the team has developed several
system key components for eCS, which all eCS 2.0GA users use today.

Yes, it only contains the uFSD. The IFS is up to whatever OS is booted to
   supply -
which can be just about anyone.

It can also boot eCS from CDFS and use RAMFS in 2. stage to get writable
storage. Boots fine from USB too (any FS)

Even EXT3 or TVFS should be possible on eCS

FreeLDR can be installed on any existing FS/partition on your disk,
since It also includes a 'MBR' that can boot any primary or logical partition
   directly.

Still in alpha state, still completely open source, and currently no public
   bins
available, since it still needs polishing, but it has been in a working state
   for
   quite some time.

If you feel like testing, SVN is public on sf.net
If you feel like wanting to participating in creating the best bootmanager
for eCS or any other OS, join us ;-)

Unfortunately, osFree lacks developers like anything else. FreeLDR is just
a little fragment of it, which at least proves, that osFree is still alive and
   kicking.

It is better to close your mouth, and look like a fool,
than to open it, and remove all doubt.
