I use to backup to tape until the old drives wore out. Anyway back then the
amount of data to backup was an order of magnitude or more smaller. As the
size of data grew I went to DVDs for a while (RSJ and all that) but that
didn't last long. Then as HDs got bigger and bigger and customers started
throwing them out to move to even bigger ones I started backing up to the
cast-off HDs (costing me nothing) which takes me to the present...

I'd go back to (new generation) tape if there is something I can afford but
also crucially whether the things would be recognised by BA2k! I have an old
scsi card in use (for type see below and other ones in a parts box pile
including a 2940) but wouldn't have a clue: firstly whether these present day
drives would work with it (or another one); secondly whether BA2k would drive
it properly if I got through the first hurdle??
