Ivan has the right idea - the press seems fascinated by the "10,000 times
normal" symbology when the actual numbers show most of the measurements are
similar to what I refer to as measuring mouse-farts in a hurricane - 10,000
farts are still trivial compared to 130 knot winds.

As for the iodine, at your age you will not live long enough to see any
effects anyway. In fact, that concern is only applicable to infants for all
realistic purposes. I underwent radiation treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma
15 years back where the principle site was the nasal pharnyx so the main
path was right through the throat area. After 5 years of close monitoring
of thyroid function, the oncologist dismissed me and said to just keep an
eye on it. I just started thyroid suppliments this Spring so even 35
sessions of direct radiation therapy had only minimal effect.

I would, however, share your concern about the tectonic issues - I've done
too much system modeling to accept the oft-repeated saw that earthquakes are
not somehow coupled, especially ones of the magnitude measured for this
   latest one.

Good fortune to you in the coming days. Enjoy what you have rather than
wasting the time regretting what you wish you had.
