   You need to read "A Mote in Gods Eye" before "The Gripping Hand". The    
   earlier Pournelle books, while interesting and adding a bit, aren't    
   needed for the story arc involving the Moties. (there is also a short    
   story that was pruned from the beginning of "A Mote in Gods Eye" that is    
   worth reading)   
   And I think these two books are excellent about showing an alien culture.
