   Wireless cards in laptops are almost always mini-PCI cards and can be   
   physically   
   unplugged and changed for different ones. Now, on certain IBM/Lenovo machines    
   this is made more tricky because they have a whitelist of allowed cards in   
   their   
   BIOS (another debate entirely) so you have to make sure that you buy one that    
   works.   
      
   I can see a T60 Intel 3945abg card up on ebay now with a buy it now price of   
   £8    
   (maybe US$12?) so they're not expensive.
