   Also be aware that simply knowing the type of computer you are buying, e.g.,   
   Thinkpad T60, isn't    
   enough. A friend and I both have T60's, but our machines have different chip   
   sets for the wireless    
   NIC. His is supported by GENMAC, mine is not. (I don't need wireless so it's   
   not an issue for me;    
   nevertheless I have reported the problem and am keeping the pressure on trying   
   to get it fixed.)   
      
   The same can be true for on board audio chipsets and for that matter a lot of   
   other components. The    
   manufacturers' assembly lines don't stop when they run out of a particular   
   chip. They just    
   substitute whatever is in stock and keep the line moving. It's the customer   
   who has to cope with the    
   unit to unit variability.
