   I went ahead and updated. I ended up using K-9 email client on my phone   
   (haven't used that in years). No problems at all and I can use it to send   
   plain text emails as well which is apparently something I am not able to do   
   from the latest gmail client on my pixel.   
      
   I certainly appreciate the help. It's doing what I need it to now.
