     The CSA had the Hundley that was later lost at sea but it was found a few   
   years ago off the coast of the Carollina's.

      Pretty much, but the Union had a blockade for shipping since the South   
   had to import and export goods.   
      Submarines where used mainly to ram and sink wooden ships.  It was for   
   offensive rather than defensive use.
