      It's not that it isn't "proper", it's that it is not configured by default.    
    I would guess that you were logged into that system via ssh or something like   
   that, rather than at a text console?  Console ports (tty#) are configured by   
   default in MBSE BBS, but not the pseudo ttys (pts/#) used for things like ssh   
   logins or  using su to get to another user login.   
      
      There are six console ports defined by default;  I normally change a couple   
   of the console ports (mbsetup option 6) from tty# to pts/#.   Like tty 5 & 6    
   to   
    pts/0 & pts/1.
