=============================================================================       * Forwarded by Vince Coen (2:250/1)       * Area : BINKD (The ubiquitous BinkD TCP/IP FTN mailer a)       * From : Lars Kellogg-Stedman, 1:123/789 (10 Mar 11 12:56)       * To : All       * Subj : binkp statistics from the nodelist       =============================================================================       ======================================================================       BinkP Statistics From the Nodelist       ======================================================================              by Lars Kellogg-Stedman, 1:322/761              I've recently been working on a suite [*] of Fidonet related software.       One of my projects has been a router that can make routing decisions       based on nodelist flags. This lets me specify a routing configuration       like this...               route-to 1:322/759 *        no-route @IBN:1:*              ....and have mail to nodes (in zone 1) flying the IBN flag delivered       directly while sending everything else via my uplink. This means I've       been spending quite a lot of time looking at the nodelist.              I've also written some low-level code for sending and receiving binkp       protocol frames.              I put everything together and audited all the nodes in the nodelist       flying the IBN flag, and I thought the following statistics may be of       general interest.              [*] http://projects.oddbit.com/python-ftn              OVERALL STATISTICS       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------              This audit was generated using nodelist 063 of Friday, March 4, 2011.              +------------------+------+       | Total nodes | 4117 |       +------------------+------+       | Nodes flying IBN | 1379 |       +------------------+------+              CONNECTION STATISTICS       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------              For each node flying the IBN flag, I tried to determine the IP address       of the node from the nodelist. You can see the actual code used to do       this extraction at https://gist.github.com/864290. In general, the       code takes the first of:              - An address attached to the IBN flag       - An address stored in the system name field       - An address attached to the IP or INA flag       - An address encoded in the phone number field              After determining the address, I attempt a connection to the remote       host and record the M_NUL messages from the remote mailer.              SUMMARY RESULTS              +-----------------------+-----+       | Successful connection | 619 |       +-----------------------+-----+       | Connection failed | 754 |       +-----------------------+-----+              BREAKDOWN OF CONNECTION FAILURES              This is a breakdown of the reasons why I was unable to successfully       connect to the remote system.              Connection failures |       --------------------------+------------------------------------------------       Hostname lookup failed | #################### (161) ##       Remote closed connection | # (3)       Unspecified network error | ############# (125) ##       Timed out | ###################################### (263) ##       No address in nodelist | ########################### (202) ##              IBN MAILER STATISTICS       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------              For successful connections I try to determine what remote mailer is in       use from the VER message (and then normalize the results by stripping       out versions/platforms/etc).              Mailer |       -------------+-------------------------------------------------------------       HtBinkD | # (1)       T-Mail | # (1)       binkleyforce | ## (13)       binkd | ################################################### (400) ##       Internet Rex | ######## (50)       qico | #### (21)       Argus | ####### (42)       Taurus | ### (18)       ROSBink | # (2)       Radius | ##### (28)       FTNMail | # (1)       BBBS | ### (15)       Beemail | # (1)       mbcico | #### (23)              BINKD MAILER STATISTICS       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------              For systems running BinkD, we can look at the version in use and the       platforms on which they are running.              BINKD VERSIONS IN USE              The versions are normalized by stripping off the first non-digit       character and everything after that (so 0.9.9a and 0.9.9beta2 both       collapse to 0.9.9).              Version |       --------+------------------------------------------------------------------       0.9.1 | # (1)       0.9.2 | ##### (11)       0.9.3 | #### (9)       0.9.4 | ######### (39) ##       0.9.5 | ## (24) ##       0.9.6 | ######## (17)       0.9.7 | ## (25) ##       0.9.8 | ## (25) ##       0.9.9 | ############################## (87) ##       1.0a | ######################################################## (146) ##       0.9.50 | # (1)       0.9.10 | ###### (13)       0.9.11 | # (1)       0.8.x | # (1)              OS PLATFORMS              Operating system |       -----------------+---------------------------------------------------------       OpenBSD | # (1)       Win95 | # (1)       Win9x | # (1)       OS/2 | ##################### (67) ##       Amiga | # (1)       Win32 | ########################################### (117) ##       FreeBSD | ############################## (86) ##       Linux | ############################################### (124) ##       NT | # (2)              THE END       ---------------------------------------------------------------------------              If you've found this analysis useful or interesting, I'd love to hear       from you.
