   I'd say so.

Oh yes. If any one of those inbetween tossed the mail sent to you or me,
it has a chance of being changed from the umlaut to something else. Once
it has been converted, it is no longer possible to convert it back again.

    NB> Exactly. :) I make a nodelist segment, that's about it. :)

I added a node to my segment by perousing the nodelist and asking the RC
to drop a RIN and I'd relist him in net387. He wasn't forced to join the
net, but he was happy to do so.

NB> Then if you receive mail from a node in Z3, where does it go from
NB> your system? To a Star hub?

It goes from here to Roger and back to Z3 for distribution. Janis gets our
posts from the same Z3 source, thus it eventually ends up at the Z1 star
system, as well as in Z2. Entirely independent of the Z1 stars.

NB> If so, my point is made.

Only to the extent that Roger's and mine eventually ends up at a Star Hub
   for distribution, but indirectly.

NB> I can only assume that unless private netmail is set directly,
NB> everything goes through the Star hubs in order to get dispursed to
NB> the rest of us, right?

Nope. Netmail from here usually goes out directly, but some of it is
routed, but not necessarily through the Star Hubs.

i.e. I wrote an article for Fidonews and thought it would go directly to
the Fidonews node listed as 1:1/1, but I had forgotten that I still had
Ross set in my route.rex to send Z1 routed mail through him. When I got
news that he had forwarded my article to Janis for delivery to Nick (Fnews
editor), I took measures to eliminate routed netmail to Z1. Especially
important there was that Ross doesn't route messages with a file attach.
