   Hi John...

AA>> And where is that so-called quality being produced? China?
AA>> I'm repeatedly disappointed that many books have "printed/
    AA>> bound/manufactured" in China markers.
JD> China is simply more competitive. Some years back I published a coffee
table style book, a Regimental History, with lots of photos and diagrams so it
made sense to have it all done nicely in colour.
JD> I costed it out to print locally and in China. there was no comparison.
The China cost included all those "extra" features such as chicken embossing,
satin book marker, fancy end-sheets etc. It was also hand-stiched not machine.
Cost price was half the price of the local cost but for five times the
number... that is local price was R120000 for 1000 copies. China cost was
R60000 for 5000 copies. That's shipping to SA included.
JD> I flew to Shanghai to to the QA checks which were perfect and still made
   a huge profit
JD> This is why I say charging that amount for the "premium edition" is
ridiculous. Make a profit, sure, but don't blatantly rip people off.
    JD> JD

   R60000 = approx $3K? For 5000 copies that's pretty good.  A local author, the
subject of "The Last Guide" , had the hardcover version of his book printed in
China for $3/copy, DELIVERED. And he retailed his book at $35 a piece. So,
there is plenty of room for profit, and consequently plenty of room to be less
   greedy. ;)

   Ciao!
