   The nice thing about using shells or shell windows is that you can get a good   
   feel for what's going on especially when something errors out or doesn't load   
   properly and if things don't load/run properly there's strace and other tools   
   you can use to figure out why. Often GUIs hide critical information one needs   
   to fix their own system.
