I've seen applications completely consume all       available memory and, thankfully memory was monitored, was able to kill       the processes that consumed all the memory to prevent the server from       going down. Ultimately, it's a safety net, it is stupid not to use it.              This is similar to partitioning out the file systems on a Linux       server.
