Check http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ for all the       gory details.              As for the commandline any book/tutorial on shell scripting (eg bash) most       often contains examples of using basic commands within a shell script which       will shed light on the usage of such commands as well as learning basic       builtin shell commands. Things like sed, grep, tar, date, etc. are oft used       commands within a shell script.
