He could also use some repair tools just to examine what he       has before he tries to take them apart and reassemble, such as supergrub       2, rescatux, or boot-repair from a live cd/usb. Even a little hex dump       could see grub's part 1 'signature' in the mbr.              He has 3 tera worth of disks there, 2 WDs & a Tosh.
