I may be getting closer to why I can't get the nvidia drivers running on
my Edgy box...and could do with some pointers.

I removed everything nvidia that I could find, then re-ran the nvidia
installer. After altering nv to nvidia in my xorg.conf file and
re-starting X, the usual problem occurred - that is, Gnome runs invisibly
   and the monitor switches off.

But this time, on rebooting in recovery mode, I found a message in the log
file saying something like "kernel module is .7814 and nvidia driver is
9476 (numbers inaccurate - best remembrance).

My question - what bloody module? And how do I update it?

   I'm running kernel 2.6.17.11 generic.

Tearing my hair out on this one....
