Chris: this should give you most of your answers as to Automatix2:
Automatix2 is a graphical interface for automating the installation
(and uninstallation) of the most commonly requested applications in
   Debian based Linux ...
   www.getautomatix.com/

Note that Mint is an entire Linux distro. Automatix2 is a GUI somewhat
   similar to Synaptic.

Doing things manually? If you are asking about the Command Line
Interface (CLI), versus using a GUI for finding and installing
applications and dependencies, I would say that for a newbie, using a
GUI is easier. Getting used to operating from the CLI takes a
while...it's kind of like doing things with DOS (but is much more
   powerful)

As other folks have said, going with Ubuntu (or one of it's main
varaiations) or Mint (Ubuntu based) largely depends on whether you want
a good deal of multimedia out of the box or not. You will find that
just about any Linux installation can be customized to suit your wants
and needs. You have a much wider choice of desktops and applications.
If you have a somewhat older machine, Xubuntu is a good choice in that
it requires fewer resouces than do Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
