   In short I don't think you're doing anything wrong.   
      
   I had a 5900 and it *DID NOT* like any form of framebufferyness in   
   conjunction with the nvidia driver. The symptoms were as you describe. My   
   system would boot and as it got to loading X the whole video system would   
   lock up and the dreaded black screen would appear.    
      
   In /boot/grub/menu.lst add "vga=normal" to the end of the line that starts   
   with "# defoptions" then run sudo update-grub from the command prompt.   
   This will disable framebuffer in the kernel. Give that a try, you can   
   always take it out again and re-run the update-grub command if it doesn't   
   work.
