I didn't even have to do that. As others mentioned, it's usually nothing
more than a browser-based setup tool that shouldn't care what browser or
   OS (or link) is involved.

As an example I put my 80+ yearold folks on BellSouth (now ATT) DSL over
the summer from Konqueror on the SuSE setup they're running, using their
   56K dialup. No problemo...

At that time, I heard of others doing DSL setups from a library or other
"public" area using Exploder or whatever the heck browser happened to be
   immediately available.

If ATT helldesk claims you MUST use M$ and/or Exploder, they're lying or
   lazy (or both).

I made very certain this was the case; IIRC, BellSouth charged extra for
having a tech come out to do it. I read over the documentation, fired up
Konqueror on 56K dialup, and had DSL service inside 20 or so minutes.

I haven't tried it on *ubuntu, but most recent distros have "wizards" on
tap (for me, SuSE's YaST) for exactly this (DSL/cable and DHCP setup).

   HTH; YMMV...
