I had been updating packages...there was a big update of several packages.

Today, a new Linux kernel was put in, but this problem was occurring
   before the kernel was installed.

What's happening is that I get the username/password welcome screen.

Then it shows a terminal automatically...don't know why.

And it holds on large icon with Ubuntu logo and text that says "Window
Manager" on the bottom. If I don't touch anything, it just sits there.
But if I make a mouse click, the terminal remains but Window Manager icon
disappears, and the rest of Gnome continues loading, with a top bar (menu:
Application / Places / System) and an icon for quitting the system.

In the bottom bar: at the lower left is an icon.

There is NO default set of 4 workspaces.

When windows get opened, they stack on one another...clicking on an
inactive window does NOT bring it to the front as an active window. There
are no task bottom bar controls (buttons) to indicate or to activate
   windows.

   Yes, something is amiss.

Oh, and I have no system sound, but I haven't had that since installing
the system in the first place.
