   Don't know what happened but I have no "windows" under GNOME.   
      
   The window that appear remain fixed on the upper left corner.  There is   
   not top bar window controls (max, min, close) and no resize.   
      
   I must have inadvertently set a modeless windows mode.   
      
   No task bar at bottom either.   
      
   When I go to System->Preferences->Windows, I get an alert:   
      
      Cannot start the preferences application for your window manager   
      Window manager "unknown" has not registered a configuration tool   
      
   I can't seem to find anything in GNOME that will give me my "manager."   
      
   Any ideas?
