   You are likely right...   Hell, gedit is generally my preferred editor,   
   but I found that if you want to be proficient in Linux, it is best to   
   learn vi early...   
      
   Sorry for the advice...      
      
   sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf   
      
   will likely be much easier for you...
