   I would suggest that even when you know what you are doing, a backup is a   
   good idea.  Typos are not uncommon, and a single typo in the wrong file is   
   certainly capable of rendering a machine unbootable.  And typos are often   
   hard to spot.  Your mind doesn't always see what the eyes do.   
      
   That said, I am usually guilty of not bothering...   ;-)
