   Why did you do this? The instruction you were given was to run "telinit 1"    
   to get to runlevel 1 (single user mode). Then, from single user mode, run    
   "telinit 2". It makes no sense to try to go into runlevel 2 when you are    
   already in that runlevel (as evidenced by your statement that you ran    
   "telinit 2" in a gnome-terminal).
