Well, the pc went back to the shop and was replaced with a HP on
which ubuntu could be installed without problems from the same cd.
Also, on the first pc, the harddisk was not recognized when trying to
install from three different media (dapper and edgy alternate and
dapper desktop cd), so I doubt all three cds were faulty in the same
way. Windows could be installed without problems, so I guess the cd
drive was fine. My guess is still that dapper/edgy don't support
sata on this mainboard out-of-the-box but anyway the problem was
solved by replacing the machine. Thanks anyway.
